Our Story: How Solar Pivot Power Began
Solar Pivot Power didn’t start in a boardroom.
It started on the road—during an unforgettable 90-day camping trip in the middle of the COVID era that changed everything for me and a lot of people.
Like many people in 2020, our plans evaporated overnight. Campgrounds closed. Reservations vanished. Indoor options disappeared. So we did what felt natural at the time: we headed outside.
What we discovered instead was something unexpected and incredible—vast, open land managed by the Bureau of Land Management in Arizona. Endless skies. Quiet nights. A sense of freedom that felt rare and deeply grounding.
And one problem that never went away.
The Daily Question: “Do We Have Enough Power?”
Every single day, power was on our minds.
Phones. Cameras. Laptops. Navigation. Air pumps. A portable shower head. And yes—movies after the sun went down. Staying connected while living truly off-grid meant relying on solar.
We tried what was available at the time:
- Portable solar panels
- Battery banks
- Improvised setups
None of it felt reliable enough for real off-grid living.
The issue wasn’t solar itself.
The issue was inefficiency.
The sun moves. Fixed panels don’t.
We searched for a sturdy, affordable, portable solar tracker—something that could follow the sun, survive outdoor conditions, and actually work for campers, RVers, and off-grid travelers.
It didn’t exist.
So we decided to build it.
From Frustration to First Principles
Solar Pivot Power didn’t start as a business idea.
It started as a problem we needed solved.
We asked a simple question:
What if portable solar worked as intelligently as large solar farms—without being bulky, expensive, or permanent?
To answer that, we assembled a core team of experienced engineers with backgrounds in:
- Hardware design
- Sensors and controls
- Motor systems
- Embedded software
From day one, our principles were clear:
Invent. Patent. Build products that actually work outdoors.
This wasn’t about chasing trends or theoretical efficiency. It was about creating reliable power where outlets don’t exist.
Design. Test. Redesign. Repeat.
The early days were hands-on and relentless.
We designed prototypes.
We tested them in real campsites—not labs.
We watched what failed in wind, dust, heat, and uneven ground.
Then we redesigned.
Again.
And again.
Every iteration made the system smarter, more durable, and more practical for real-world use. We weren’t interested in specs on paper—we wanted gear that worked when you actually needed it.
“We took proven solar tracking principles and re-engineered them for real outdoor use—portable, durable, and designed for how people actually camp.”
— Dale Hanks
Proving the Concept: Kickstarter #1
Our first major milestone was launching on Kickstarter.
It wasn’t just about funding—it was about validation.
Backers believed in the idea of portable solar tracking because they had lived the same problem themselves. They understood what it meant to worry about power off-grid.
That first campaign taught us invaluable lessons about:
- Manufacturing
- Logistics
- Customer feedback
- Real-world expectations
Most importantly, it showed us just how much room there was to improve.
What We’ve Learned — and What’s Next
Since our first Kickstarter, we’ve taken everything we learned and applied it forward.
We’ve:
- Improved the mechanical design
- Refined the tracking intelligence
- Strengthened durability and stability
- Simplified setup and usability
Now, we’re preparing for Kickstarter #2—with a better product, clearer goals, and a roadmap toward commercial availability next year.
Our focus is no longer just proving the idea.
It’s delivering a product people can rely on.
Our Mission
Solar Pivot Power exists to make quiet, clean, intelligent power available wherever adventure takes you.
We believe:
- Off-grid power should be reliable—not stressful
- Solar should adapt to the sun—not the other way around
- Technology should enhance outdoor experiences, not complicate them
We’re building solar for people who actually use it.
“Solar Pivot Power started because we needed reliable power off-grid—and couldn’t find it. We didn’t set out to build a company. We set out to solve a real problem.”
— Uttam Singh
